Honestly, have you heard of people saying "I like Rajini but also I have a crush on Kamal Hassan"? They can never come to a conclusion about who is a better performer or an actor! But who among the two could possibly be a better politician is an easy question.
Shall we just rewind and look at all the instances which stand witness to the political capability of both these personalities? In India, cinema and politics have always been interlinked. Cinema meant credibility to the mass. So, whoever rocked the cinema industry is deemed to be a perfect leader.
Rajinikanth's political entry in Tamil Nadu was anticipated since 1996 when he suggested people not to vote for Lt. Selvi. J. Jayalalitha though he had not started a party then. Recently, he made announcements and started his political campaign with a party name and logo with no direct involvement in politics. When he visited Thoothukudi to check with activists who were protesting against the Sterlite issue, he was greeted with a very cold ‘Who are you’. Once in a press meet, he said he got all confused when reporters asked him about the policies of his party - that was naive. He labeled social activists as extremists. When he was asked his opinion about the release of the Rajiv Gandhi murder convicts, he answered with a ‘which seven people?’.
These are all evidence that Rajinikanth cannot make it. He spits out what comes to mind, right away. Unfortunately, that is not the quality which makes you a talented politician in contemporary democracy. In this democracy, one needs to be able to know people’s minds like the back of their hand.
On the other hand, we have Kamal Hassan, whose talking style is widely criticized for not being precise. Interestingly, that is what makes a good politician. You need to take the questions thrown at you, chew it and spit out the answer to a different question that you have ready in your mind, making the crowd believe you gave the answer that was needed. Think about it, has Kamal Hassan every failed to answer any question? Has he ever hesitated to answer?
Kamal Hassan has been a part of Anti-Hindu protests, just when he started his film career. He has been very vocal about his religious stance. When Anitha committed suicide because of NEET, he had something to say; When an actor from Malayalam film industry was harassed, he had something to say; When people gathered to protest against Sterlite, he went to the protest site. He keeps on talking about something - to stay relevant, to be in the scene. That is basically it. Politics is about showing up, being there and staying in the scene. Kamal Hassan does it better than Rajinikanth. So, it is a matter of fact that Kamal Hassan will make a better politician than Rajinikanth.
Our opinion does not really make a difference, what does make a difference is the power of voting. We can see for ourselves whether Kamal Hassan or Rajinikanth has proved to be a good politician, during elections. However, the time has to decide everything.
