One of the most prominent features of the town is the Fort which gives it the much needed name and claim to Fame. Dindigul was the first town in Madurai to come under the British rule, and the British made Dindigul a proper military settlement. They fortified the Dindigul Fort further adding cannons and Sentinel rooms. After a few years, in the British rule, Dindigul slowly lost its importance to Madurai, and Madurai emerged as the most important city in South India.
